Being clear about a child's diagnosis (especially with minority children) can mean the difference between an incident at school where they're labeled as "defiant" or "aggressive" vs. "having behaviors" or "emotionally dysregulated". I'm in the behavioral health field & see this often. Acknowledging & advocating can go a long way. The more we collectively speak up, the better. Autistic differences such as sensory struggles and communication difficulties can sometimes be perceived as shyness or social anxiety. Many people on the Autism spectrum do not tolerate unpredictability or changes to their routines very well. These sudden changes can lead to meltdowns due to the amount of stress they are under. This happens because they are expected to conform to neurotypical or allistic standards of socialization and it is distressing and draining to feel like they have to constantly "perform". Do you love someone with Autism who requires a lot of alone time? This is probably why! Ask them what they need (personal space, noise-cancelling headphones, etc.) if you want to show your support. Sensory overload is a common trait of neuro-diversity. (Autism, PTSD, sensory processing disorder, ADHD) It's deeper than a minor annoyance & can really be debilitating if unable to get relief. This can result in eloping or "running away" (typical for SOME children on the Autism spectrum to literally bolt when overwhelmed), angry outbursts or a meltdown, or even a shutdown (which is exactly what it sounds like). In any situation, knowing your triggers is important. The only way to advocate for yourself, be preventative if possible, or at least know how to handle it if it happens, is to be self-aware. I'm big on educating about the value of introspection. Being clear about an ADHD diagnosis (especially with Black children) can mean the difference between an incident at school where they're labeled as "defiant" or "aggressive" vs. "having behaviors" or "emotionally dysregulated." It's important to advocate for yourself & for those who are unable to do so. ❤️ Imagine a child diagnosed with a condition labeling them as defiant, which can lead to negative treatment from others, causing trauma. ‼️ That child later shows signs of having ADHD, but their healthcare provider denies testing due to the previous diagnosis. 🚩 The doctor fails to acknowledge that symptoms can vary in onset & the child goes undiagnosed & doesn't receive services that could help. 😔 The child has ADHD & some emotional dysregulation. ✍️🏾 *I don't diagnose, but I educate & advocate based on what I see, learn & know. 💯 #monarchi #monarchcreates #advocate #Neurodiversity #childmentalhealth #mentalhealth
