Opening the Book on Understanding: Children's Literature About Autism 📚

As a behavioral health professional, author, and strong advocate for neurodiversity, I'm passionate about bridging the gap between understanding and acceptance. One powerful tool in this journey is children's literature. By sharing stories that reflect the experiences of those on the Autism spectrum, we can foster empathy, build bridges & empower young minds to embrace their unique strengths.

Today, I want to highlight some books that beautifully navigate the complexities of Autism for young readers:

1. 123 Autism and Me by Teliesha.Sharee: This vibrant, lyrical picture book offers a window into the world through the eyes of a child with Autism. Through her poetic voice, we experience the sensory delights and challenges of from a child's perspective, celebrating their individual strengths and journeys,

2. The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin by Julia Finley: This captivating biography unveils the extraordinary life of Dr. Temple Grandin, a prominent scientist and advocate on the Autism spectrum. Through clear, engaging language, the book celebrates her unique thinking style, resilience, and groundbreaking contributions to the field of animal welfare.

Books are just one piece of the puzzle! Here are some additional tips to foster understanding and acceptance:

  • Open conversations: Encourage open and honest conversations about Autism with children, addressing their questions and concerns with sensitivity and accuracy.
  • Seek diverse perspectives: Explore books, movies, and documentaries that offer a variety of perspectives on Autism, showcasing the unique experiences of people.
  • Celebrate differences: Highlight the strengths and unique qualities of individuals on the Autism spectrum, creating a culture of acceptance & appreciation for neurodiversity.

As a neurodivergent ADHD specialist and mental health advocate, I understand the importance of finding ways to naturally boost dopamine levels in adults as well! Look out for my next blog post where I'll be sharing practical strategies to increase dopamine and support focus and well-being for adults with ADHD!

Remember, fostering empathy and understanding begins with small steps. By sharing inclusive stories and celebrating differences, we can create a more inclusive and accepting world for everyone.

Warmly,

Teliesha.Sharee, Author & Neurodiversity Advocate
